News and Updates

Barkingside New Hope Fellowship organised a fundraising event in support of the Redbridge Night Shelter on 18th March 2006.  High Street shoppers were invited to take a break from the unseasonably cold weather and relax in the comfortable facilities of the Manna House over a cup of Fairtrade tea or coffee.  The event ran throughout the day, with hot soup and tasty rolls also offered over the lunchtime period.

Visitors were invited to donate 50p for their tea and coffee or £1 for the soup, but many gave more.  Redbridge Night Shelter provided a display for the event, to provide more information about its work to those who came along to contribute.  The event was timed to coincide with Fairtrade fortnight, designed to draw attention to the value of ethically sourced products from developing countries.

Redbridge Night Shelter is based in York Road in Ilford, and provides a meal, bed and breakfast for homeless adults in Redbridge.  It is supported by many of the churches in the area.  Working with individuals, the Shelter helps them come off the streets and resettle in the community.  14 staff and some 142 volunteers keep the Shelter running throughout the year.

The fundraising event was advertised to all households along the High Street, and volunteers from Barkingside New Hope Fellowship gave out leaflets on the day.  The Manna House’s own volunteers also extended the shop opening hours to ensure a warm welcome for all who supported the event.
